Honda Car Key Replacement: Keys, Fobs, and Smart Keys We Handle
Honda's key technology has changed significantly across model years. Older Civics and Accords used a basic transponder key — a blade cut to match the door and ignition, with a chip embedded in the head that must be programmed to the vehicle's ECU or the car will not start. Mid-generation models introduced flip-style key fobs that combine the remote entry buttons with the transponder blade. Newer Pilots, Ridgelines, CR-Vs, and Odysseys often use proximity smart keys — also called Honda Smart Entry keys — that allow push-button start as long as the fob is inside the vehicle. Each type requires different cutting and programming procedures, and our technicians are trained on all of them.
When a Honda Civic owner is locked out of their car near the convention district or a Honda Odyssey driver has locked keys in the car at a Rosemont parking garage, the solution is not to force anything open. We use non-destructive entry methods wherever possible to protect your door seals and locking mechanism, then immediately address the key situation on the spot. If the original key is lost entirely, we can generate a new key from your Vehicle Identification Number, program it to your immobilizer, and have you driving again — all without a tow truck.
