Nissan Car Key Replacement: What Type of Key Does Your Vehicle Use?
Nissan has used several different key systems across its model lineup over the years, and knowing exactly which one your vehicle requires is the first step toward a correct replacement. Basic metal keys with a transponder chip were common on Altimas and Maximas built through the mid-2000s. These keys look like a standard cut key, but the chip inside must be programmed to the car's immobilizer — otherwise the engine will crank and immediately stall. From roughly 2007 onward, Nissan began rolling out the Intelligent Key system, a proximity-based smart key that allows keyless entry and push-button starting. Rogues, Muranos, and later Altimas commonly use this system. Finally, some older or base-trim Nissans still use a basic non-transponder mechanical key.
When you call us, our dispatcher will ask for your vehicle's year, model, and VIN so that our technician arrives with the right key blank and programming equipment already loaded in the van. We carry Nissan-compatible key blanks and aftermarket Intelligent Key fobs that are programmed to OEM specification. This matters because a fob programmed incorrectly will not trigger the push-button start or may cause your car's security system to flag the key as unauthorized. Our technicians test every key and fob function — lock, unlock, trunk release, and remote start if equipped — before we consider the job complete.
